I came across this music video on youtube.com today…it is Special Ed performing his 1989 hit “I got it made”. I remember when this song came out and how new Rap was to me. It was core, on a different level than the Bad Brains, Bad Religion and Black Flag, I listened to but I was drawn to it none the less. Getting hooked on rap from the get go probably had something to do with my reggae and DUB getting me addicted to bass but either way, I was hooked from the start.
Snoop Doggy Dog ended up listing Special Ed as one of his influences in his rap career. Watching this vido got me thinking though, the rapper bling evolution really is rapid and vast. It really started out core, guys that up until this point, never would have been able to get the word out from the street to the masses. Rap really gave these guys a platform to tell everyone what they wanted to say and how they were gonna say it. They weren’t influenced by other rappers yet, they were entirely themselves wearing no name clothing shooting videos in junk yards and warehouses. Here is Ice-T’s video, Original Gangster.
Now, over 15 years later, the Rapper Bling Evolution is in full force. I look at guys like 50 Cent, Snoop Doggy Dog, Dr. Dre, Jay Z, P Diddy, Lil Bow Wow…I could keep on going. These artists are all unbelievably talented AND unbelievably bling. Check out the Rolls Royce, Mansion, Armani Suits, Gold Teeth and Diamonds (ICE)!
And here we are today, every video has hot half naked women, a couple of body guards, 22 inch rims on the Phantom and they are always flashing mad cash! Proof that if you love something and have set your mind to it, you will be successfull.
